This article presents an ethnographic study on the user experience (UX) design of the photo- and video-editing apps of millennial and Generation Z participants from different cultural groups. The case study calls attention to the implications of rhetorical misrepresentations of reality that photo- and video-editing apps afford and encourages future large-scale studies on the negative psychological and behavioral impacts such apps can have on users' psychology, behaviors, and well-being. The authors use frameworks in virtue ethics to argue that despite slight variations, photo and video app UX has ethical implications that can negatively impact young adult users. For example, the study suggests that the photo and video app features tend to subvert the traditional Chinese virtues of modesty, honesty, and the middle way and that hyperbolic and playful designs can cause addictive behaviors.

While halide perovskites (HPs) have achieved enormous success in the field of optoelectronic applications, much attention has been recently drawn to the unique polarization sensitivity of HPs, either intrinsic or extrinsic, which makes HPs a potential candidate for innovative applications in directly polarized luminescence and detection. Herein, the research status in the field of polarization-sensitive HPs, including linear polarization and circular polarization, is comprehensively summarized. To evaluate the effectiveness of HPs in generating and detecting linearly or circularly polarized light, the principles and characterization methods of polarized luminescence and detection are introduced. Sequentially, the state-of-the-art development of the strategies that induce the linear or circular polarization characteristics of HPs is systematically reviewed, based on which the application of polarization-sensitive HPs in the field of polarization luminescence and detection are summarized. Moreover, the current challenges and opportunities are discussed, and prospects of the future development in this promising field are outlined.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has become one of the fastest growing waste streams around the world, putting tremendous pressure on the environment, resources, and public health. A practically driven question about how to promote the development of the WEEE recycling industry plagues many countries, especially in developing economies such as China. This study uses an expert decision-making system based on the fuzzy Delphi technique and improved Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method to identify the critical barriers and their cause–effect relationships in the Chinese WEEE recycling industry. First, using the fuzzy Delphi technique, we find that nine barriers significantly impact the development of the Chinese WEEE recycling industry. Then, three critical barriers which include the implementation of policies and regulations, qualified disassembly, and unqualified disassembly are identified by employing the improved DEMATEL method. Furthermore, implementation of policies and regulations belong to the cause group, and the other two barriers belong to the effect group. Finally, some practical implications are proposed to promote the sustainable development of the Chinese WEEE recycling industry. To be specific, the Chinese government should optimize the implementation details of the e-waste take-back legislation, establish a flexible reward–supervision–penalty mechanism to support the formal collector, and improve the collection efficiency. The results of this paper are of value to firms that participate in WEEE recycling and to the government that aims to promote the sustainable development of the WEEE recycling industry.

As a trace gas involved in hydration during plant photosynthesis, carbonyl sulfide (COS) and its leaf relative uptake rate (LRU) is used to reduce the uncertainties in simulations of gross primary productivity (GPP). In this study, 101 independent observations were collected from 22 studies. We extracted the LRU, stomatal conductance (gs), canopy COS and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes, and relevant environmental conditions (i.e., light, temperature, and humidity), as well as the atmospheric COS and CO2 concentrations (Ca,COS and Ca,CO2). Although no evidence was found showing that gs regulates LRU, they responded in opposite ways to diurnal variations of environmental conditions in both mixed forests (LRU Hedges’d = ?0.901, LnRR = ?0.189; gs Hedges’d = 0.785, LnRR = 0.739) and croplands dominated by C3 plants (Hedges’d = ?0.491, LnRR = ?0.371; gs Hedges’d = 1.066, LnRR = 0.322). In this process, the stomata play an important role in COS assimilation (R2 = 0.340, p = 0.020) and further influence the interrelationship of COS and CO2 fluxes (R2 = 0.650, p = 0.000). Slight increases in light intensity (R2 = 1, p = 0.002) and atmospheric drought (R2 = 0.885, p = 0.005) also decreased the LRU. The LRU saturation points of Ca,COS and Ca,CO2 were observed when ΔCa,COS ≈ 13 ppt (R2 = 0.580, p = 0.050) or ΔCa,CO2 ≈ ?18 ppm (R2 = 0.970, p = 0.003). This study concluded that during plant photosynthesis and COS assimilation, light and water conditions co-regulated the stomata and LRU.

The superhydrophobic surfaces inspired by the lotus have excellent performances and are known for their low contact angle hysteresis and smooth surfaces. However, there are still some problems, such as the unstable structure, poor durability, high product cost and so on that need to be improved. Those issues can be avoided via liquid-infused surfaces(LIS), which are inspired by Nepenthes and consist of a mico-nano structured substrate and a smooth continuous atomic-grade lubricant. Compared with superhydrophobic surfaces, LIS not only achieves the same hydrophobic properties but also has smaller contact angle hysteresis, smoother surface, more stable structure and lower preparation cost. Although the existence of a lubricant layer improves the performance of the material, it also leaves a hidden danger, which is easy to lose and leads to the deterioration of the durability of the material. Therefore, the lubricant-free slipper materials have attracted more and more attention in recent years due to their low volatility, good durability and excellent lubrication performance. In this review, the types of LIS lubricants and their physicochemical properties were summarized at the beginning and then the applications of LIS in various fields were introduced. At the end of this paper, some solid lubricants and their applications were described, and the future development prospects of LIS lubricants also were expected.

Root nodule formation in many leguminous plants is known to be affected by endogen ous and exogenous factors that affect formation, development, and longevity of nodules in roots. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of the genes which are involved in the regulation of the nodulation signaling pathway. This study aimed to investigate the effect of terpenoids and terpene biosynthesis genes on root nodule formation in Glycine max. The study aimed to clarify not only the impact of over-expressing five terpene synthesis genes isolated from G. max and Salvia guaranitica on soybean nodulation signaling pathway, but also on the strigolactones pathway. The obtained results revealed that the over expression of GmFDPS, GmGGPPS, SgGPS, SgFPPS, and SgLINS genes enhanced the root nodule numbers, fresh weight of nodules, root, and root length. Moreover, the terpene content in the transgenic G. max hairy roots was estimated. The results explored that the monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and diterpenes were significantly increased in transgenic soybean hairy roots in comparison with the control. Our results indicate the potential effects of terpenoids and terpene synthesis genes on soybean root growth and nodulation. The study provides novel insights for understanding the epistatic relationship between terpenoids, root development, and nodulation in soybean.

Cycads represent one of the most ancient lineages of living seed plants. Identifying genomic features uniquely shared by cycads and other extant seed plants, but not non-seed-producing plants, may shed light on the origin of key innovations, as well as the early diversification of seed plants. Here, we report the 10.5-Gb reference genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis, complemented by the transcriptomes of 339 cycad species. Nuclear and plastid phylogenomic analyses strongly suggest that cycads and Ginkgo form a clade sister to all other living gymnosperms, in contrast to mitochondrial data, which place cycads alone in this position. We found evidence for an ancient whole-genome duplication in the common ancestor of extant gymnosperms. The Cycas genome contains four homologues of the fitD gene family that were likely acquired via horizontal gene transfer from fungi, and these genes confer herbivore resistance in cycads. The male-specific region of the Y chromosome of C. panzhihuaensis contains a MADS-box transcription factor expressed exclusively in male cones that is similar to a system reported in Ginkgo, suggesting that a sex determination mechanism controlled by MADS-box genes may have originated in the common ancestor of cycads and Ginkgo. The C. panzhihuaensis genome provides an important new resource of broad utility for biologists. The study assembled a chromosome-level genome of Cycas panzhihuaensis, the last major lineage of seed plants for which a high-quality genome assembly was lacking. The study closes an important gap in our understanding of genome structure and evolution in seed plants.

Efferocytosis, the clearance of apoptotic cells (ACs) by macrophages, is critical for tissue resolution, with defects driving many diseases. Mechanisms of efferocytosis-mediated resolution are incompletely understood. Here, we show that AC-derived methionine regulates resolution through epigenetic repression of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) phosphatase Dusp4. We focus on two key efferocytosis-induced pro-resolving mediators, prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), and show that efferocytosis induces prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2/cyclooxygenase 2 (Ptgs2/COX2), leading to PGE(2) synthesis and PGE(2)-mediated induction of TGF-beta 1. ERK1/2 phosphorylation/activation by AC-activated CD36 is necessary for Ptgs2 induction, but this is insufficient owing to an ERK-DUSP4 negative feedback pathway that lowers phospho-ERK. However, subsequent AC engulfment and phagolysosomal degradation lead to Dusp4 repression, enabling enhanced p-ERK and induction of the Ptgs2-PGE(2)-TGF-beta 1 pathway. Mechanistically, AC-derived methionine is converted to S-adenosylmethionine, which is used by DNA methyltransferase-3A (DNMT3A) to methylate Dusp4. Bone-marrow DNMT3A deletion in mice blocks COX2/PGE(2), TGF-beta 1, and resolution in sterile peritonitis, apoptosis-induced thymus injury and atherosclerosis. Knowledge of how macrophages use AC-cargo and epigenetics to induce resolution provides mechanistic insight and therapeutic options for diseases driven by impaired resolution. Ampomah et al. show that apoptotic cell-derived methionine taken up by macrophages during efferocytosis plays a role in mediating tissue resolution by providing a substrate for DNA methylation and repression of the ERK1/2 phosphatase Dusp4, causing activation of ERK1/2 and expression of pro-resolving mediators

Incomplete understanding of how hepatosteatosis transitions to fibrotic non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has limited therapeutic options. Two molecules that are elevated in hepatocytes in human NASH liver are cholesterol, whose mechanistic link to NASH remains incompletely understood, and TAZ, a transcriptional regulator that promotes fibrosis but whose mechanism of increase in NASH is unknown. We now show that increased hepatocyte cholesterol upregulates TAZ and promotes fibrotic NASH. ASTER-B/Cmediated internalization of plasma membrane cholesterol activates soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC; ADCY10), triggering a calcium-RhoA-mediated pathway that suppresses b-TrCP/proteasome-mediated TAZ degradation. In mice fed with a cholesterol-rich NASH-inducing diet, hepatocyte-specific silencing of ASTER-B/C, sAC, or RhoA decreased TAZ and ameliorated fibrotic NASH. The cholesterol-TAZ pathway is present in primary human hepatocytes, and associations among liver cholesterol, TAZ, and RhoA in human NASH liver are consistent with the pathway. Thus, hepatocyte cholesterol contributes to fibrotic NASH by increasing TAZ, suggesting new targets for therapeutic intervention.

In ultrasonic vibration-assisted drilling (UVAD), the processing stability is strongly influenced by the ultrasonic vibration system's vibrational characteristics. The effect of tool parameters on UVAD's vibrational characteristic was experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed in this paper. Firstly, a measurement experiment was designed to assess the above effect in three various tools under different loads. The relationship between the ultrasonic power and amplitude was used to indirectly monitor the ultrasonic amplitude variation, which was corroborated by the UVAD test results. The ultrasonic amplitude and power were mainly controlled by the stiffness coefficient, while the damping coefficient effect could be ignored. Furthermore, the tool vibration frequency exhibited an increasing trend with the load value. Finally, the effects of the stiffness coefficient and damping coefficient on the vibrational characteristics were theoretically substantiated. The results of this study are considered instrumental in selecting tool and process parameters in ultrasonic machining.
